Commonly grown as an edible vegetable, the artichoke is a variety of thistle native to the Mediterranean and believed to have been first cultivated by North African Moors in 800 A.D. It’s medicinal use has been traced to the early 20th century, when it was recommended as a cure of liver and bile disorders.
